So, according to the Secretary-General of the Federation of associations of food industries of Iran Kaveh Zargaran, the country plans to supply foreign markets 3-4 million tons of wheat, as its reserves reached 12 million tonnes, which significantly exceeds domestic needs. The expert noted that the high inventories are the result of ongoing government policies aimed at increasing domestic wheat production, and the imports of grain in recent years amid the threat of food security due to the economic sanctions.

Iran plans to begin export of wheat and flour, however, at present the country is difficult to compete with the cheaper Turkish production in the key markets of importing countries in the region, particularly Iraq.

Recall that in the current season the General production of wheat in Iran has reached 9-year high of 13.5 million tonnes, but not the whole grain flour has the necessary qualities. In this regard, as explained by K. Zargaran, until the summer of 2017 there is a possibility of import of 1 million tonnes of wheat with high gluten content to meet the needs of local private millers.
