The European Union agreed on a compromise solution regarding the cultivation of genetically modified crops, which will allow countries to ban them, even if EU authorities approved them for cultivation.

Participants of the campaign in defense of the environment stated that the agreement is an improvement over the current regime, but expressed concern that Europe can still be simplified cultivation of GM crops, as representatives of the GM industry has criticized the agreement.

Widespread in the Americas and in Asia GM crops are rare in Europe, where opinion is divided, and many countries represent the opposition, including France and Germany. The UK supports the production of GM crops.

An earlier attempt to reach a compromise on the production of GM crops have failed in 2012, when the EU Ministers failed to agree.

The new law, which requires the formal consent of all 28 member States and the European Parliament, gives countries the right to impose a ban on GM culture, approved by the European Commission.

Until recently, any restrictions on the national level, approved by the EU GM varieties tended to be contested in court.

Representatives of the "green" in the European Parliament stated that the agreement was not rigid enough and risks opening the door to genetically modified organisms in Europe, despite the clear opposition of the citizens.

Europabio, which represents GM industry, made a statement that the agreement sends a negative pulse innovative industries and eliminates the freedom of choice for farmers.

To date, the EU authorities approved only two varieties of GM crops for commercial cultivation, one of which was later denied by the court.

So GM maize Monsanto MON810 only allowed for cultivation in Europe and in Spain and Portugal during the decade.

A greater number of GM crops are allowed to be imported and used only as animal feed.

The Minister for the environment of Italy Gian Luca Galletti said that the compromise is fair and deliberate.
