EU policy on Wednesday signed a new law on the production of genetically modified crops in the European Union, freeing the way for new varieties that are several years of waiting for permission.

One of the first crops that will receive the approval of the European Commission, probably a strain of corn that is resistant to insects and is known as 1507, the developers of which DuPont and Dow Chemical - 14 years waited until the leadership of the EU will allow its cultivation.

Widespread in the Americas and Asia GM crops in Europe has split society into supporters and opponents. UK stands for GMOs, while France and other countries oppose them.

An earlier attempt to reach a compromise on the cultivation of GM crops have failed in 2012, when the EU Ministers failed to agree.

A new compromise tends to make everybody happy, giving member States the right to prohibit GM crops even after they have been authorized by the European Commission.

The Minister of agriculture of France, stéphane Le Foll said that in France the production of all GM corn is prohibited, and the prohibition will not be canceled.

Under the old rules member States may prohibit or restrict GM variety within their territory only if they had new evidence that he poses a risk to human health or the environment, or in the event of an emergency.

Until now, corn Monsanto MON810 was the only GM varieties produced in Europe; in Spain and Portugal it is grown for about ten years.

The GM industry has stated that the new law, which allows you to restrict the cultivation of GM crops, ignores scientific evidence of the safety of GMOs, while the opponents of GMOs argue that the law opens the gateways crops, which they consider detrimental to biodiversity.

Vytenis andriukaitis, EU Commissioner for health and food safety, said that the law is a positive step compliance with legislation, citizens ' expectations while respecting the rights of all parties.

After signing on Wednesday at the European Parliament in Strasbourg, the law will be published in the Official journal of the EU on Friday and will enter into force 20 days.
