Syngenta withdraws two applications for GM foods in the EU
The decision about the withdrawal is not linked to the requests of the majority of EU countries on avoidance of GMO cultivation

Syngenta has withdrawn two applications for authorisation of genetically modified products in the European Union after revaluation of their commercial potential, announced company representatives.

The company requested permission to manufacture in the EU of maize MIR604 with the signs in 2010 to control larvae that damage the roots.

Syngenta reported that there was a request to allow corn production with three signs - MIR604, Bt11 (for resistance to insects and herbicide) and GA21 (herbicide tolerance).

This application was also withdrawn.

At Syngenta there are still pending applications for the approval of two other varieties.

The company said that the decision about the withdrawal is not linked to the requests of the majority of EU countries to the evasion of production, the only GM crops permitted for commercial production in the EU.

Nineteen member countries of the EU had asked Dodge for all or certain regions of cultivation of Monsanto, said the European Commission.

Despite the fact that the production of GM crops is widely spread in the Americas and Asia in Europe strong public opposition, because GM crops have altered DNA, introducing genes from other species to improve their resistance to pests or to herbicides, and GMOs could pose a threat to human health and the environment.
