In the season 2016/17 Lithuania can gather a good harvest of grain, predicts the Foreign agricultural service at USDA (FAS USDA).

In the current season (July-June) the gross grain harvest was a record 6.0 million tons, which is 18,5% higher than in 2014/15. The harvest of wheat, the main grain crop amounted to 4,38 million tons.

The winter crops for the harvest-2016 are progressing well, although in some areas they have suffered from frost. According to forecasts of FAS USDA, in the next season Lithuania can gather a good harvest, although below the record levels of the current season – 5,316 million tonnes of grain, including 3,55 million tons of wheat and 0,880 million tonnes of barley.

In the last few years, Lithuania has become a significant player on the world export of wheat. Of the Lithuanian exports of wheat tends to increase. The Lithuanian exports of barley are unstable and highly dependent on the situation on the domestic market.

This season, Lithuania can export 3.6 million tonnes of grain (+24% for 2014/15), including 3,05 million tons of wheat (+35%) and 0.34 million tonnes of barley (down 17%). The increase in exports associated with the growing demand for wheat in the Arab countries and North Africa.
