Turkey is the absolute leader in the production of hazelnuts – it accounts for 75% of world production. From hazelnut production directly or indirectly on the order of 4 million Turkish residents.

Hazelnuts are grown mainly on the black sea coast in the East of the country. Voters in this region most strongly supported Turkey's President Recep Tayyip Erdogan at the recent April referendum. A week after the referendum began the purchase of state Grain hazelnut Council, Turkey, which led to a sharp increase in the price of hazelnuts on the world market.
