The cost of food basket in Russia increased by 5% since the beginning of 2017, the reason was the rising price of vegetables, it follows from the material of Rosstat. The price of a grocery set has overtaken inflation for January-April was 1.5%, 3.3 times. The total increase in food prices occurred against the background of price growth for vegetables – with the beginning of the year they rose by 21-49%.

"Stocks of domestic vegetables is over – this is partly due to the lack of sufficient storage facilities. And we are forced to import products. Buy it for dollars, plus increased transportation costs, and increasing the price", — said the Executive Director of the National Union of vegetable producers Mikhail Glushkov.

According to him, the main suppliers of cabbage, potatoes, carrots and onion to Russian market — CIS countries, Iran, China, Egypt and Israel.

It is noted that the cost of the minimum set of food products per month in Russia on average at the end of April 2017 amounted to 3872,5 of the ruble. In Moscow and St. Petersburg the rise in prices was above the average of 5.8% and 5.7%, respectively (up to 4710 rubles, and 4707,3 rubles).

In the minimum set, which cost per person per month Rosstat counts includes 33 names, including meat, fish, eggs, dairy products, bread, vegetables, apples, cereals, tea, sweets, sugar, and salt.
