In mid-July, the head of the National Agency of the sanitary and veterinary control and for food safety J. Branescu in an interview with state news Agency "Agerpres" said that Romania is an "island of epidemiological safety", so far not recorded any case of the African plague of pigs (Achs).

But these conclusions proved to be premature, since July 31, the world organization for animal health was notified the first African swine fever outbreak in Romania, reports IA "Kazakh-Zerno". According to official data, the loss of one head of domestic pigs was registered on July 27, 2017 in a private farmstead in the North-West of the country in the province of Satu-Mare (the area bordering the Republic of Hungary and Ukraine).

According to the veterinary services of Romania, the farm contained 4 heads of swine, one of which fell, and the other 3 heads were destroyed.

District Satu-Mare is located in the foothills (Carpathian mountains) region of Romania and has a densely wooded area with high density of wild boar and traditional living of the peoples of the maintenance of farms, including hog operations. These facts cause additional risks for the occurrence of other outbreaks of ASF.

It should be noted that with this case on the territory of the United Europe in the area of trouble for ASF fall 6 countries (Poland, Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia, Czech Republic and Romania), and two of them admitted in his epizootic situation for ASF as endemic, and not amenable to control.

In turn, the Russian experts predicted in advance and provided his European counterparts that the data about the real threat of the spread of ASF virus through Ukraine and the Balkans to Central Europe with high population of domestic pigs and wild boars.

The Rosselkhoznadzor once again expresses concern at the development of the situation on ASF in the EU and calls on the competent authorities of the affected countries and countries at risk, for closer cooperation in the field of prevention and control of this transboundary disease.
