Now VAT on food in Latvia has one of the highest in the EU – 21% higher than the tax in Denmark is 25%.

According to D. Reizniece-Ozola, the Ministry of Finance in this matter careful, but does not reject the proposal and can support it, if there is support for local producers, lower prices and if it will meet the budget priorities.

The Minister believes that reduced VAT on certain food groups can enter at a time, and then analyze the effect. The period may be three years.

Regarding the budget, said D. Reizniece-Ozola, he can afford a reduction in taxes if the government will agree to consider it a priority.

In April of this year, established by the Ministry of agriculture, the working group came to the conclusion, that in Latvia already now it is possible to reduce VAT on fresh vegetables, fruits and berries 5%.
