According to "Analysis of the market of fish flour in Russia", prepared BusinesStat in 2017, 2012-2016 showed a drop in its sales volumes in the Russian market. In General, for the period, a decline of 50.1%: from 81.1 thousand tons to 40.5 thousand tons Is due to the fact that fish are quite expensive for livestock producers, especially in the context of the adverse economic situation.

During the years on the Russian market of fish meal tended to have import substitution, the dependence on imported products has significantly decreased. So, the share of imports from the volume of domestic production decreased from 59.6% in 2012 to 12.1% in 2016 In real terms imports declined over the years from 48.8 to 11.5 thousand tons. One of the reasons for this situation is the desire of meat producers to reduce their costs. In this regard, they waive the rather expensive imported flour from fish, crustaceans, molluscs and other aquatic invertebrates in favor of cheaper Russian analogues and substitutes. The sharp devaluation of the ruble in 2014-2015 made imported goods even less affordable for Russian consumers. Another reason for the decline of this index was to improve the quality control of imported products from other countries by the Rosselkhoznadzor, as a result of the foreign manufacturing enterprises were refused to receive veterinary certificates and were forced to suspend deliveries to Russia.

It is expected that in 2017-2021 years, as the recovery of the Russian economy, the natural volume of sales of fish meal will grow annually, which will contribute to rising demand from consuming industries. In 2021 the figure will reach the level of 50.8 thousand tons.
