The United States remained the largest market for Scottish salmon, with sales of 193 million pounds, followed by France (188 million pounds), China (69 million pounds) and Ireland (34 million pounds).

Taiwan has also taken its place among the top five markets for salmon from Scotland, with a total value of sales at 16 million pounds, surpassing Germany, Poland, Canada, Belgium and the Netherlands, which are among the top ten export destinations.

"Demand for Scottish salmon continues to grow thanks to a worldwide recognition of its excellent taste and quality. These parameters are key factors for growth in the markets of USA, EU and Asia," said Scott Landsberg, Executive Director of the Scottish salmon producers (SSPO).

"This record success in exporting Scottish salmon - this is an example for other Scottish food overseas and another reminder of the importance of salmon to the economy of Scotland and the sector of food and beverages. Our achievement means that the community and local suppliers also benefit from the economic success of this sector," he added.

Agriculture Minister Fergus Ewing welcomed the news of the growth of exports, noting that the government will do everything possible to support and defend the sector of food and beverages, which faces increasing uncertainty on the labour market and export in the coming British exit from the EU.
