The authorities intend to reduce the production of too sweet drinks, the use of which is threatened by obesity, including in children.

The tax will charge non-alcoholic beverages containing more than 5 grams. sugar per 100 ml of liquid. If the drink contains more than 8% of sugar, the amount of tax is increased. The tax will not affect beverages with high milk content, as they are essential for a healthy diet.

The total amount of tax expected to be approximately 240 million pounds annually. The money collected will be directed to programs that promote physical activity and balanced diet among schoolchildren.
