Market fresh vegetables Russia: division into mass and premium segments is accelerating

The domestic market of greenhouse vegetables is increasing momentum and is confidently moving in the direction of perfect competition. According to the calculations of "Technology of Growth" 2017 last year showed an increase in the consumption of fresh tomatoes and cucumbers more than 20% compared to the failed 2016. Russian greenhouse vegetables collected 13%, and imports grew by 11%.

The increase in the trade deals of fresh vegetables in the off-season has led to the stabilization of wholesale and retail prices, on the one hand, and expansion of opportunities for the Russians on the other. The modern consumer increasingly wants to buy not just the cucumber, and select, in his opinion, the most delicious and fresh, and at a reasonable price. The value of the price as the main criteria for the selection of fresh products remains only in the mass segment, whereas a notable increase shows the premium segment, where the main motives of consumer choice are taste, smell, colour, freshness, packing and fashion.

One of the fashionable trends were vegetables-snacks in small packages. The first swallows in this segment was the cherry tomato, which first appeared in the Russian online stores about 10 years ago, and has already gained high popularity among consumers. Currently in retail keeps popping cocktail cucumbers, peppers and even eggplant with a maximum size of 7 – 9 cm and a weight of 40-50 grams. The analysts of "Tekhnologii rosta", the prices for vegetables-snacks 4-5 times higher than standard, and the volume of their sales, of course, several orders of magnitude lower. Mass production of mini-vegetables premium segment in Russia is still has too high risks, but they can be a great complementary product to the traditional line of industrial greenhouses with good margins.
