"Rosselkhoznadzor on 9 July arrested 25,377 thousands of tons of banned products (24,441 thousand tons of vegetable products and 935,95 tons — animal products). Of them destroyed 25,089 thousand tons", — stated in the message.

Russian President Vladimir Putin at the end of July 2015 signed a decree of destruction from August 6 of the same year of products prohibited for import in the country under anticyclonic measures (the so-called food embargo). The government was allowed to destroy such food by any legal means.

This measure does not apply to goods imported by citizens for personal use. According to Russian authorities, the sanctions the destruction of products helps to reduce the flow of contraband food, as it becomes economically disadvantageous.
