ASF infected wild boar are living longer
Last week ended the international Symposium on the role of wild boars in the spread of ASF held in Brno (Czech Republic). Exchange of experience fighting the virus has become an important part of the strategy to counter, because previously, no country had met with the presence of the disease in wild pigs.

Despite the fact that the greatest risk of spreading the virus is a human factor wild boars remains crucial in the transmission of ASF domestic livestock. Previously it was thought that infected pigs can live for up to two weeks, but studies have shown that a growing percentage of animals resistant to disease and capable of carrying the virus over long time. About it said Dr. Tomas Podgursky from the Institute of biology of the Polish Academy of Sciences in Bialowieza.

"Not fully known why the wild boars infected with ASF, are living longer and longer," says Podgursky. "Animals shot detect antibodies, and, fortunately, such individuals represent a small percentage of the population. But until recently, there were less than 1%, and now a few percent".

Also unknown is the answer to the question, what is the density of the boar population safe and will lead to a spontaneous disappearance of the virus, so it's hard to argue that recommended in Europe density of 0.1 boar per square kilometer will bring the expected effect in the fight against this disease.

Increased hunting of wild boars is recommended, but as still to be seen, it is not fully effective in the fight against African swine fever. The participants noted the necessity to intensify the search and elimination of dead boars. In Poland, for example, discovered in the forests of dead animals - it is mostly found accidentally by hunters individuals, and not the result of systematic combing of forests and fields.

The Symposium marked the successful experience of the Czech Republic to eliminate the source of ASF. Was quickly formed the quarantine zone: the authorities closed an area of 50 square kilometres for hunting and from access by third parties. in order not to perepoloshit boars and not allow them to go beyond the zone, the shooting was brought specially trained police snipers, who acted at night with night vision equipment and silencers. Played a role and remuneration: for shot wild boar were paid 300, and was found dead - 200 euros.
