The scientific staff of the Department of biotechnology, all-Russian state Centre quality and standardization of medicines for animals and feed (fgbi "VGNKI") has developed new methods for identification of genetically modified organisms. The introduction of these methods into practice will increase the effectiveness of identification and quantification of genetically modified lines of plants (canola, potatoes, rice and other), including GM lines, which are not registered in Russia.

Unregistered in Russia line, GMOs are a potential risk to consumers, because they were not conducted safety tests. To mitigate these risks from 2016 to 2018 on the basis of the fgbi "VGNKI" was implemented scientific-research work (SRW) on the creation and improvement of new methods of screening GMOs and broaden the spectrum of detectable genetic elements of transgenic plants.

In the course of the research staff of the Department of biotechnology of the fgbi "VGNKI" has developed methods of identification and quantitative determination of 11 GM plant lines in feed and food. Also created a screening methodology for the identification of nine separate genetically modified ingredients of vegetable origin. These components include sections of transgenic constructs sequences of genes that provide the plant with certain properties, and other supporting elements. Transgenic constructs integrated into the genome of plants to change their properties, for example, for the emergence of resistance to pests or frost.

In addition, VGNKI developed an optimal algorithm research of animal feed, feed additives and food products for the presence of GMOs. Also on the example of GM lines of soybean MON89788 experts assessed the possibility of using new technologies – digital PCR to identify GMOs.

A VGNKI developed methods of identification of GMOs are already in practice, others are for professionals of specialized laboratories in the near future.
