The fishing industry is one of the traditional sectors of the economy. One of the priorities of fisheries for the inland waters of the Republic is commodity fish-farming. 70 percent of the trout grown in the territory of Russia, today produced in Karelia.

Vitaly Olegovich is a member of the Expert group at the Agency of Strategic Initiatives on the implementation of the Standard activities of Executive bodies of subject of the Russian Federation for ensuring favorable investment climate in the region, a member of the working group of the Ministry of agriculture of the Russian Federation for improvement of legislation in the field of aquaculture, a member of the working group on "aquaculture" at the Consultative Committee on agriculture at the Eurasian economic Commission.
