Deputies of the lower house of the French Parliament rejected the amendment providing for the imposition of duties on palm oil, under pressure from major suppliers such as Indonesia and Malaysia. According to Le Figaro, Indonesia has threatened to stop buying airplanes and satellites of the French production.
As stated by MP from the Republican Nicolas Duik, in the case of the duty introduction Indonesia has promised "retaliatory economic measures relating to the contracts Airbus aircraft and space satellites". The MPs has considered the possibility to introduce a duty on palm oil in the amount of €90 per tonne. While palm oil produced under conditions of organic farming, as intended in the amendment fee shall not be taxed.
The growing global demand for palm oil and, as a consequence, the expansion of area under palm oil plantations leads to deforestation of tropical forests. In mid-2015, the French Minister for ecology, energy and sustainable development ségolène Royal urged French consumers to abandon the Nutella paste due to the presence of palm oil. The manufacturer, Italian company Ferrero, said that uses oil, obtained exclusively in conditions of organic farming.
