Corn stocks as of 31 December amounted to 3,120 million tonnes (-20% compared to December, 2015), including white corn 1,601 million tonnes (-33%).

Reason for the decline in reserves is a poor harvest caused by drought. According to the South African national Committee for the evaluation of crops (CEC), the gross harvest of corn in 2016. fell to 7,537 million tonnes, which is 24% less than in 2015. The harvest of white maize used for food purposes, decreased by 31% to 3,254 million tonnes.
