The Nestle company expressed support for the adoption of voluntary Management goals for the control of products and medicines USA (FDA) for the reduction of sodium in food products in the United States unlike many other companies in the industry who did not support the initiative of the government.

The company also said in a statement that will increase the number of foods and beverages in its portfolio that can reasonably fit into a diet that contains less than 2000 milligrams of sodium per day. Approximately 43% of Nestle products currently meet this goal.

Nestle appealed to the members of Congress, who can block the funding for the initiative, to demonstrate support for the goals to reduce sodium.

This ad is one of the last measures of Nestle in the transformation of the company, taking for the basis of science-based nutrition. This transformation consists of two parts.

Nestle makes changes to the ingredients of existing products to better fit the concerns and fears of consumers regarding health today. This includes removing artificial ingredients from categories such as chocolate candy, frozen pizza and ice cream. In the latter category Nestle also removed corn syrup with high fructose and GMO ingredients from certain products.

But the company is also moving into new segments of healthy foods, including medical foods. Specialists of the Institute of Health Sciences Nestle suggested that the products can serve as the basis for a new method of providing treatment for or preventive care or for treatment of acute and chronic diseases.

Another company, Hormel, recently announced a new line of medical products, Hormel Vital Cuisine, designed for cancer patients to help them deal with the loss of energy and muscle mass during treatment.

To achieve certain health-related purposes regarding the products, changing the formula may not be enough. Manufacturers who want to reach medical standards of products, can increase investment in research activities and/or to form a partnership with other medical organizations to play an important role in the growing business of health food products.

Last month Mars announced that will support FDA's voluntary targets for reducing sodium (the first company that announced it publicly) and take the who recommendations regarding nutrition, the formula to change products. The company is the first major manufacturer to do so. These changes include the obligation of Mars to reduce the sodium content by 20% over five years.
