The essence of the event lies in the fact that a number of Brazilian meat processors produced bribing health inspectors to obtain a license to sell its products in the domestic and foreign markets. Some sources report such details as the sale of meat and meat products "tainted" and expired, and for "eyes-only" products are processed with various chemicals and cheaper products, for example, water and flour of cassava.

This situation negatively affected the exports to China, which is the largest market for Brazilian poultry, beef and pork. At present, China imposed a ban on imports of meat and meat products from Brazil. The EU, Canada, USA and others have also introduced various forms of control imported from Brazil meat products.

The Brazilian trade Association of producers of beef, pork and poultry warned the scandal could have a major negative impact on employment and the economy of the country, because the share of this sector is 15% of the total exports of the country, and the total amount of all exported from Brazil of meat is about $13 billion a year.
