Such period large supply on the meat market, says the head of the National swine Union Yuri Kovalev. "The so-called period of great meat is, as a rule, the fourth quarter when there is a mass slaughter of poultry, pigs and cattle in private farms. As a result, in the fourth quarter of meat usually produced almost two times more than in other periods, and the result is a sharp decline in wholesale prices. Therefore, intervention purchases can play a role," — said Yuri Kovalev.

"Today, manufacturing makes up a rather routine process for issuing products. According to Rosstat, in 2016 in farms of all categories produced 13.9 million tons of cattle and poultry for slaughter in live weight, which is 3.4% more than in 2015. The number of pigs grew by 2.4%, to 22 million, poultry – by 1% to 552,8 million, the number of cattle decreased by 1.6% to 18.7 million

As was stated by Dmitry Medvedev at a meeting with livestock producers and 4 April, the country's self-sufficiency in meat and meat products reached 89%.
