Law on the labeling of GM salmon would require the Secretary of health and human services independent scientific review of the environmental assessment food and drug administration for all genetically modified fish, including salmon, for human consumption.

Legislation was introduced in the midst of the fishing season for salmon in Alaska. Preliminary data for the harvest collected by the Department of fisheries of Alaska, showed that as of July 15, commercial fishing vessels have caught more than 62 million salmon, including more than 32 million in Bristol Bay.

Murkowski said that the main purpose of the legislation is to guarantee to consumers the provision of all facts and information about selling salmon that consumers could make an informed decision when buying salmon.
