The authorities of Leningrad region have decided to gradually abandon the cultivation of potatoes, cabbage and carrots in the open ground due to climatic risks. Instead of vegetables you will plant crops adapted to North-West, told reporters on Tuesday the Governor of the region Alexander Drozdenko.

"We'll go on a bold step - we gradually begin to abandon the traditional culture which we have always been in agriculture is potatoes and cabbage and carrots. We understand that in such difficult weather conditions, even using modern technology, we cannot compete with Belarusian potatoes, carrots, cabbage, as with Egyptian, Turkish, so we go that will gradually reduce the area under vegetables including potato. This does not mean that we will reduce the area in General - we will increase the production of grain," - said Drozdenko.

He added that the Leningrad region will grow coarse grains, including triticale, to meet the needs of livestock farms in the region. "We see that we do not have enough feed grain, and we will focus on our North grain and regionalized breeding in the Leningrad region, and which gives a yield of not less than wheat in the Krasnodar region - about 50 quintals per hectare," - said the Governor.

According to Drozdenko, Leningrad oblast achieved good results in agriculture at year-end. "Despite the fact that we lost a crop of potatoes and field vegetables (according to the Committee for agriculture and fishery complex of the region, this year farmers have collected 76% of last year's potatoes - approx. TASS), we have growth in General in agriculture by more than 4%. This is a good figure, mainly due to the processing of livestock products, greenhouse products," he said.
