Scientists have discovered what foods can prevent cancer.

To such conclusion scientists from the London Institute of Francis Crick,reported on the website of the institution. In their study, they examined the effects on the body of a substance called indole-3-carbinol (indole-3-carbinol, I3C), useful properties of which were already known, but it was not clear the mechanism of how it protects from cancer.

As it turned out, I3C activates a protein called aryl hydrocarbon receptor (aryl hydrocarbon receptor, AhR). It acts as a sensor of the environment, transmitting signals to immune cells and epithelial cells in the intestine to protect us from inflammatory reactions.

We studied genetically modified mice that cannot produce or activate AhR, and found that they have quickly developed intestinal inflammation that has progressed to cancer of the colon, explains the study's lead author Dr. Amin, Meiji. - However, when we transferred them on a diet with a high content of I3C, inflammation did not develop. Also was observed a reduction of malignant tumors.

Now scientists plan to conduct experiments on humans.
