In the fall of 2016 Kimball Musk and his colleague Tobias Peggs plan to run the project Square Roots that will help the beginners to master the principles of innovative agriculture.

Entrepreneurs will create a vertical farm inside 10 shipping containers with an area of about 29 square meters each. The containers will be grown organic greens, and each mini-farm will be managed by a young entrepreneur. This scheme will allow the beginners to experience agriculture and learn how to make profit from this business.

The vertical farm Mask and Peggs will apply the technology used in several start-up Freight Farms and ZipGrow. One container Square Roots yield corresponds to 80 acres of farmland.

A vertical farm has a number of advantages compared to conventional farming. On these farms consumed 80% less water than normal. It is important that vertical farms allow you to grow fresh herbs right in the city limits, that is, in the areas of concentration of labour force and consumers.

If Square Roots will show themselves well, such enterprises will be built within new York and other US cities.

Vertical farms can become a new promising form of technology business in agriculture. Currently in the United States in addition to Square Roots running a few test sites, which will test the commercial potential of the technology.

In particular, large investors, Goldman Sachs and Prudential Financial, has invested $39 million in a vertical farm AeroFarms in Newark, USA. This farm, located in the warehouse, promises to be the largest vertical farm in the world. From November AeroFarms plans to cooperate with a supplier of "organic" products Farmigo and sell greens in the grocery stores in new York.

AeroFarms plans to grow to 900 tons of fresh herbs a year, free of pesticides and sunlight. This is three times more trees than can be grown on traditional farmland comparable area. The farm is equipped with a smart system controlling conditions in the racks of plants: soil moisture, light levels and more. Farm AeroFarms will use 95% less water and 50% less fertilizer than conventional growing. You will be able to position products as "organic", since cultivation will not be used pesticides and herbicides, because inside the warehouse, no pests, no weeds.

Similar projects at the intersection of traditional food industry and high technology attracted the attention of investors due to the high commercial potential which can be realized in the coming years. The savings on logistics and high performance can be the basis of a successful business vertical farm.
