According to the news service on grain South Africa (SAGIS), thirty one week of the current season (may-April), South Africa imported 1 782,9 thousand tons of corn, including yellow – 1 160,1 thousand tons, white – 622,8 thousand tons.

The main supplier of yellow corn was Argentina (998,1 kt). Of 94.5 kt put Brazil, 50.1 thousand tons of Ukraine and 17.5 thousand tons – Romania. Suppliers of white corn were Mexico (591,3 kt) and the USA (57,9 thousand tons).

Over the same period in 2015/16 South Africa imported 738,9 thousand tons of corn, including yellow – 670,3 thousand tons.

Previously, Africa was a net exporter of corn. However, due to poor harvest import much more than export for the second consecutive season.

The export of South African maize for thirty-seven weeks of the current season totaled 587,7 thousand tons, including yellow – 221,3 million tonnes, white – 366,4 thousand tons, All exported corn was intended for African countries, with the exception of 4.1 tons of yellow corn shipped to the DPRK.

Despite the fact that exports of maize from South Africa increased by 28% compared to last season, it remains lower than usual.
