Scientists have developed a new ‘smart tooth’ device that monitors the time someone spends
chewing, drinking, eating, smoking and coughing. The new invention could
benefit virtually all areas of healthcare, such as helping those with
respiratory problems, or people who are struggling to lose weight.
The new invention, created by researchers from the University of Taiwan, tracks individuals’ oral habits by recording gross and minute movements of the jaw. The ‘smart tooth’ takes
advantage of the fact that the jaw moves in different ways depending on the
activity – and a computer programme has been developed to crunch the
information and show what the person has been doing.
