Mitsubishi Corp. will pay $1.39 billion for the purchase of the Norwegian company Cermaq.

Cermaq, which has production sites in Chile and Canada, as well as in Norway, is one of the largest companies in the world on salmon production. Last year the company sold 142 300 tons of salmon, which accounted for about 6% of the world market.

The proposal acknowledges the financial and strategic value Cermaq and tempting bonuses to shareholders.

Mitsubishi Corporation will hold a strategy for strengthening the presence of Cermaq to important Asian markets. The purchase agreement Cermaq is primarily a way for Mitsubishi to ensure the supply of salmon for clients in their native Japan.

The Norwegian government, which owns 59,17% Cermaq, to support the sale of the company. However, the Ministry of trade of the country, said that they could sell their shares to another party, if that party were able to make a more tempting offer.

Mitsubishi, known primarily as a carmaker, is not a newcomer in the fish business. The conglomerate owns farm salmon in Chile.
