Germany through the European Commission is seeking the permission of the individual member countries of the EU to ban the cultivation of genetically modified crops before sowing the crop 2015.

The Minister of agriculture of Germany, Christian Schmidt said that you should take into account socio-economic reasons, to allow any country of the European Union to ban GM crops, even when the unit has recognized crops safe.

This would impose a ban on the basis of opposition from a significant portion of the population.

Schmidt seconded, approved June 12 EU initiative, which will give member States the freedom to ban the production of GM crops, even if they will be allowed block for cultivation in all the countries of the European Union.

Final decisions have not yet been adopted, but the European Parliament on 11 November also confirmed plans to consider bans on the country level.

Meanwhile, the resolution of production in the EU GM corn varieties Pioneer 1507, developed by American companies, groups, DuPont and Dow Chemical, is still pending.

Schmidt said that the final decision on the ban on the national level must be taken in a timely manner, to prepare for next year's harvest. Then maize 1507 will not be seeded in Germany.

Now, if the EU approves crops as safe, all member States of the EU are obliged to cultivate.

Regarding the prospect of regional bans on the cultivation of GM crops representatives of the European Commission state that has not reached unanimity.

To date, the EU allowed for commercial cultivation only two types of GM crops, one of which was later blocked by the court.

Only one variety of GM corn that is permitted in the EU - MON810 (Monsanto) - has for decades grown farmers Spain and Portugal.
