Defenders of the environment has filed a lawsuit against the government of Canada to thwart AquaBounty Technologies to produce genetically modified salmon eggs in Canada and send it to Panama.

AquaBounty stated that its GM salmon poses no threat to the environment and will be stored in special conditions without sickness and antibiotics.

Modified fish can grow to the size of wild salmon while using 75% a smaller amount of food, reducing the carbon footprint of the product a maximum of 25 times, according to AquaBounty.

However, environmentalists have called this process a hazardous experiment, which can lead to interference in the genetic structure of all populations of wild Atlantic salmon after mating with GM.

Concerned parties fear that measures to prevent such crossing are inadequate and can lead to unforeseen circumstances, said participants of the campaign of the Centre for the promotion of ecology.

According to the lawsuit, the canadian government violated its own environmental laws by giving the company AquaBounty much more complete powers than she deserves, potentially opening the way for other companies for the production of eggs for the GM fish in Canada.

The lawsuit also indicates that the government did not fulfill required procedures, giving permission.

AquaBounty 20 years trying to get permission for its GM salmon to be sold for consumption in the United States. According to its management, AquaBounty, a lawsuit environmentalists completely untenable.

New salmon has the potential to become the world's first genetically modified fish available for human consumption; after that the GM industry will begin to request permission for other products of animal origin, said the company.
