On 2 February the Deputy Minister of agriculture of the Russian Federation – head of Federal Agency for fishery Ilya Shestakov held a meeting with Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Ambassador of the Republic of Peru to the Russian Federation Luis Benjamín Chim Arteaga.

The parties discussed the prospects of increasing trade in agricultural products, cooperation in the field of fisheries and aquaculture, as well as the issues of development of investment cooperation in agriculture.

Ilya Shestakov congratulated Luis Benjamín Chim Arteaga with the appointment and expressed hope for effective cooperation in the framework of the intergovernmental mixed Russian-Peruvian Commission on trade-economic, scientific-technical cooperation and fisheries, co-chair of who he is.

The volume of mutual trade in agricultural products and foodstuffs between Russia and Peru in 2016 amounted to almost 106 million dollars. It's about 40% of the total volume of trade between countries.

The Deputy Minister noted that Russia is interested to increase the supply of food from Peru, first of all, fruits, nuts, and cocoa beans.

"From our side we are ready to increase exports of wheat and other grains into your market", — said Ilya Shestakov.

Ambassador extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Peru to Russia confirmed the interest in the field of mutual investment. He offered to exchange information about potential companies and investors to organize a bilateral business forum.

The parties agreed to hold the next meeting of the intergovernmental mixed Russian-Peruvian Commission on trade-economic, scientific-technical cooperation and fishing this fall. By this time it is planned to summarize the results achieved at the previous intergovernmental meeting, and in working order to remove all outstanding issues.

During the talks, participants also discussed the preparation of a draft inter-institutional Agreement on cooperation in scientific and educational spheres in relation to fisheries and aquaculture.
