The gross wheat harvest as the area sown in Egypt will remain stable: 8.1 million tons and 1.26 million hectares. Domestic consumption of wheat will increase to 20 million tons, 0.3 million tons compared to the current season, mainly due to continuing population growth, and also due to the presence of refugees from Iraq, Syria, Libya, Yemen and Sudan.

The total number of refugees is estimated at 5 million. In the second half of the current season, consumption of high-quality pastries and bakery products declined after prices have doubled due to the weakening of the Egyptian pound. In the first half of the season, the price of flour with a yield of 72% was 3500 lb/ton in the second half it jumped up to 7000 lb/ton.

Private bakeries and large retailers raised prices on products from wheat flour, forcing consumers to switch to cheaper bread. Imports of wheat in the season 2017/18 will rise to 11.5 million tonnes, 0.5 million tonnes compared to the current season.
