Dry and arid was the beginning of the summer in Belarus: in some areas in may fell only 11% of the monthly norm of precipitation. Due to such abnormal weather has still not appeared mushrooms, and summer residents are sounding the alarm: what will happen to the harvest?

Sputnik figured out how things are going with the crop "Belarusian heritage" potatoes, and also learned a couple of tips for gardeners on how to keep root crops in a drought.

"Until the potatoes have not reached the stage of flowering, to feed on moisture it can from the mother tuber reserves there. Of course, dry weather is not very good, but nothing terrible for potatoes is not happening," said Sputnik scientific Secretary of the NPC for potato vegetable and fruit growing Belarus NUN Inna Rodkina.

According to the scientist, daytime temperatures around +25 for potatoes are not something bad, but +30 is not the most comfortable weather.

"While there is no precipitation, it is not necessary to loosen the soil — it only dries. It is necessary to water the potatoes, but not every day, and twice a week in the afternoon for two to three hours before sunset. Then he will feel comfortable," — said the Agency interlocutor.

Most of the moisture the potato have in the period of budding and flowering — at the same time, the formation of new tubers, so don't forget the absence of rains on the soil. But if the rains and the roots saturated with moisture, to fear precisely nothing — no harvest this year Belarusians will remain.

By the way, NPC not so long ago prepared official recommendations for the care of potatoes in dry weather.
