Conducted by an international team of scientists study the conditions of wintering of salmonids in the Gulf of Alaska have shown excellent results, said the press service of the Agency.

During the week of the salmon expedition, from 18 to 26 February, the research ship of the Agency "Professor Kaganovskii" performed 16 trawls.

"With the exception of the first two in canadian waters, the others were successful. It is noted in the catches of pink, chum, coho, sockeye and Chinook salmon", — stated in the message.

During trawling, scientists collect samples for estimation of plankton — feeding base of salmons, using an Oceanographic probe-ADCP measured temperature, salinity, oxygen content, estimated hydrochemistry, habitat of salmon in General. At the same time experts mark fish with the use of unique equipment to capture live salmon, TINRO specially purchased for this expedition. Tagging of fish will allow scientists to understand the migration routes of salmon in the American and Asian herds.

Expeditions with the program of complex researches like the present, organized in the framework of the International year of the salmon earlier in this part of the ocean was carried out. Work in the Gulf of Alaska will allow us to obtain data about the conditions of wintering of salmon in the North-East Pacific, the biological characteristics, abundance and distribution of populations.
