Collecting a high yield of sunflower in the 2016/17 season (1953 thsd tonnes as opposed to 1786 thousand tons in 2015), Romania managed to increase the export of sunflower seeds by the end of September-March 2016/17 to 1176 thousand tons compared to 1029 thousand tonnes over the same period last season. Just the 2015/16 season Romania exported 1080 thousand tons of this culture.

The main importers of Romanian seeds are traditionally the EU countries. The top importer is the Netherlands increased its imports during the period under review up to 280 thousand tons (261 million tons in the September-March 2015/16). France increased purchase of up to 272 thousand tons (127 thousand tons), Bulgaria – 70 thousand tons (60,4 thousand tons).

Purchasing reduced: Spain – 85 thousand tons (95 tons), Hungary – 53 thousand tons (87 thousand tonnes), Italy – 54 thousand tons (78 thousand tons), Turkey – 32 thousand tons (84 tonnes).

According to Eurostat, the harvest season 2017/18 Romanian farmers expanded the planted areas under sunflower by 2% compared to 2016. to 1037 thousand hectares, that allows to hope for another good export season.
