According to Minister of agriculture of Latvia Janis Duklavs, in connection with the spread of African swine fever (ASF) in the territory of Latvia can be destroyed about 40 thousand domestic pigs. Affected households, the state compensates the losses.
According to the Minister, the final decision on this issue will take the government of Latvia. This may happen already this week.
"We offer and will take this decision - domestic pigs will need to score, giving a respective compensation, not waiting until the economy comes ASF. This meat can be implemented, it can be used for food. Thus, we will prevent the further spread of the virus in animals. Domestic pigs should be installed on the territories where the state of emergency, including in the buffer zone. In this zone, according to our estimates, about 40 thousand domestic pigs," said the head of Minzemledelija.
Let's remind, that on July 2, Latvia introduced in separate places and the rural municipalities of Latgale - bordering Russia and Belarus of the region in the East of the country - the state of emergency, which will last till October 1. However, due to the rapid spread of ASF power Latvia last week declared a state of emergency throughout adjacent to Russia and Estonia zone.
African swine fever is not a threat to humans, but extremely dangerous for wild and domestic pigs. The disease is rapidly spreading among animals and causes serious damage to agriculture.
