The European Commission compensates 75% of the cost of combating and preventing the spread identified in Latvia African swine fever (ASF), reported the press service of the Ministry of agriculture of the Republic.

"The Minister of agriculture of Latvia jānis Dallas at the meeting of the Council of Ministers of agriculture and fisheries of the EU on 13 October in Luxembourg has ensured that the EC will cover up to 75% of the costs of measures taken to combat and prevent the spread of ASF in Latvia", - informs the press-service.

ASF in the country was discovered in late June. In this regard, the authorities of the country from July 2 to October 1, declared a state of emergency in the entire adjacent to Russia, Belarus and Estonia zone. In late September, the effect of this decree was extended until 1 January 2015. In addition, since the dangerous virus got almost to Riga, the authorities expanded the area of the state of emergency, adding new territories and municipalities.

Affected by ASF farms in the state had previously undertaken to offset the losses. For adult pig in a refund in the amount of € 170 for okormleniju pig - 120 euros, and for suckling pig - 35 euros. For these purposes, the Ministry of agriculture will produce 150 thousand euros.

In Latvia ASF detected in 119 wild boars and 72 domestic pigs. Just destroyed 564 pigs.

ASF disease (Montgomery) was first recorded in 1903 in South Africa. For humans, the virus does not pose a danger.
