Russia has reduced food imports by 6% in 2016
The Russian imports of food dropped in 2016 by 6% compared to the previous year and accounted for $25 billion, exports grew by 5% to $17 billion

This was announced by the Minister of agriculture Alexander Tkachev at the final Board meeting of the Ministry of agriculture.

"Russian agriculture is undergoing a transformation. If earlier we talked about import substitution, now is the time to focus on increasing exports. At year-end the volume of food imports declined by 6% to $25 billion, while exports rose 5% to $17 billion", — said Alexander Tkachev.

The Minister stressed that the import is still high, but it has been steadily declining. "Import in our country is still quite high – $25 billion, but two years ago it was for $40 billion We are steadily declining,"he said.

Alexander Tkachev added that Russia has reduced imports of meat, vegetables and potatoes and to ensure the growth of exports of pork, poultry meat, wheat, corn, vegetable oils, and sugar.
