These agreements allow to avoid the application of countervailing duties against Mexican sugar in the amount of 40,48 – 42,14%. "The agreement allows Mexico to hold a privileged position as the main supplier of sugar to the U.S. market and at the same time, guarantee the volume of export is similar to what the country exported since the liberalization of access in 2008", – said in a communique.

If the United States will require more sugar Mexico will have priority in parts of the proposal, and only if she does not have the necessary amount of sugar, this proposal will be made by US to suppliers from third countries.

This spring, the Mexican government abolished the existing export permits for sugar in the United States. This happened on the background of U.S. President Donald trump, who ordered to develop a project to build a wall on the border with Mexico, for which, according to him, needs to pay Mexico itself. The authorities of the Latin American countries categorically say they are not going to pay.

Subsequently, the governments of Mexico and the United States held a series of talks which reached an agreement on the supply of Mexican sugar to the U.S. market, ending thus, "sweet war" as this conflict was called in the media. The Minister of trade United States Wilbur Ross and Minister of economy of Mexico Ildefonso, Guajardo in early June, announced at a joint press conference in Washington that Mexico agreed to reduce up to 30% with 53% of the volume delivered to the United States of refined sugar from the total previously agreed quota.
