Iran cancels barter deal for Pakistani wheat
(Business Recorder) - A proposed 1 million tonne wheat barter deal between Pakistan and Iran has been cancelled, a Pakistan government official familiar with the matter said, more than a year after it was first mooted.

The barter deal, first proposed in March 2012, was to have involved Iran exporting
fertiliser and iron ore to Pakistan in exchange for wheat. But it ran into
months of deadlock over price and quality.
"I am not surprised that it is cancelled," one European grain trader said.
"In fact, Pakistani wheat exporters have been unwilling to participate in
talks about the deal in past months."
Other traders said the deal no longer made sense after Pakistan's poor harvest this
year saw the country become a net importer of wheat.
"The Iranians had doubts about the quality and possible fungus contamination of
Pakistani wheat," another trader said. "The Iranians have also been
able to make major purchases of wheat on international markets in past
months."
An Iranian trade barter deal with India was more successful. India has been paying for Iranian crude oil imports in rupees, which can be used by Iran to buy Indian commodities including rice and
soymeal.
